Transmission Trouble? We Know How to Fix It.

Your transmission is responsible for transferring power from your engine to your wheels — and doing it efficiently across a wide range of speeds and driving conditions. It’s one of the most complex systems in your vehicle, and when something goes wrong, you feel it.
There are three main types of transmissions, and our team at AutoMed in Goldsboro, NC is experienced in servicing all of them:
Automatic transmissions. The most common type in modern vehicles. Automatic transmissions handle gear changes for you and often offer more gear ratios, which is helpful for towing, hill driving, and everyday fuel efficiency.
Manual transmissions. Less common in new vehicles but still on plenty of cars and trucks on the road. Manual transmissions require the driver to change gears and are known for giving drivers more direct control over the vehicle.
Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT). A newer design that uses a pulley-based system instead of fixed gears. CVTs are tuned for a smooth, natural feel and are popular for their fuel efficiency.
Signs Your Transmission Needs Attention
Transmission problems don’t always announce themselves the same way — the symptoms depend on what type you have. Here’s what to watch for:
Rough or hard shifting. If gear changes feel jarring or delayed, it’s often a sign of low transmission fluid or a timing issue.
Loud noises. Whining, clunking, or humming can indicate low fluid or internal wear.
Fluid leaks or a burning smell. Transmission fluid keeps the system lubricated and cool. A leak or burning odor means something needs immediate attention.
Failure to engage or get into gear. This can point to a fluid issue or a problem with the transmission’s computer system.
Grinding gears or difficulty shifting. Often caused by worn synchronizers or a clutch issue.
Loud noises. Usually points to a worn input shaft bearing or worn gears.
Stuck in gear or won’t engage. A sign of a more serious internal problem that needs prompt diagnosis.
Vibration or jerking. Unusual sensations while driving are a common early indicator of CVT trouble.
Slipping. If the engine revs but the vehicle doesn’t accelerate the way it should, the CVT may be slipping.
Delayed drive or fluid leaks. Both warrant a prompt inspection before the problem gets worse.
